Plan first, or ask a question
The switch in the message box picks what crisp does with your message. Build changes your app. Plan writes a plan you can edit before anything changes. Ask answers a question and changes nothing.

On this page
At the bottom left of the message box, a switch shows Build, Plan and Ask. Build is selected unless you choose another. With the switch selected, the Left and Right arrow keys move between them.
| Mode | What crisp does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Build | Makes the change in your app. | You know what you want. |
| Plan | Writes a plan you can edit. Nothing in your app changes until you build it. | The change is big, or you want to check crisp understood you. |
| Ask | Answers a question about your app in plain words. Nothing changes. | You want to understand something first, such as how a feature works. |
Start a new app with a plan#
While a new project is set up, crisp asks How should we start? Choose Build it now to see a first version in a few minutes, or Plan it first to read and edit a short plan, then build it in one click. For a long first description, Plan it first is suggested.
Work with a plan#
A plan has short sections: what will be built, the pages, the data, the look and feel, and the steps. It appears in the chat as a card.
- Build this plan builds it.
- Edit lets you change the text yourself. Press Save when you are done.
- Ask for changes lets you describe what should change, for example "add a page for teachers". crisp writes a new plan.
The plan is also saved in your app as .crisp/plan.md, so you can find it in the Code tab.
Pick a look#
While a new project is set up, crisp offers Pick a look: three designs, each with its colours, its fonts and a one-line mood, chosen to suit your idea. The first plan card offers the same three. Picking one is optional. If you skip it, crisp chooses the look for you.
If you pick a look while the first version is being built, crisp applies it as soon as that version is ready. If you pick one later, crisp starts a short build that applies it.
After an answer#
An answer in Ask mode ends with two buttons: Build this makes the change it describes, and Plan it first turns it into a plan.
When a build keeps repeating itself#
crisp stops a build when it is not getting anywhere: the same error comes back three times after fixes, the same file is changed back and forth three times, the same step fails five times in a row, or many steps go by with many failures and nothing gets closer to working. A card says what kept failing, in plain words. You are not charged for that build.
- Try a different approach asks crisp to find the cause and plan another way. You review the plan before anything changes.
- Go back to the last working version restores your app as it was after the last build that worked. It appears when there is one.
- Show me the details shows what kept failing.
Next steps#
After a build, a few suggested next steps appear above the message box, such as "Add sign-in". One click sends it as a Build message.
